Fugro-GEOS
Awards for Students in Marine Science and Technology
The Society is pleased to announce that Fugro-GEOS Ltd will be again
offering awards for the best project or thesis work in applied marine
science or technology. There will be awards of £500 in each of
the categories of final year undergraduate and MSc.
The invitations to universities to nominate students will be
made later this year.
The scope of the awards cover a broad area of marine science and
technology. They are applicable to much of the work carried out in
oceanographic, marine environmental and marine technology related
courses of study. Undergraduates will only be considered for their
own project, and thus joint projects should not be considered.
Accompanying recommendations should contain a short synopsis of the
project/thesis, and appraisal of the quality of the work and of the
student, and an assessment of its application potential to marine
science and industry. It should be no longer than two pages of A4.
Nominations are assessed by a Selection Panel comprising members of the
Society's Educational and Training Committee, including a representative
from Fugro-GEOS Ltd.
A short-list of a maximum of five students will be drawn up, and their
full project work/ thesis will be requested from their universities.
Depending on timescales, the awards are usually presented at either the
Society's Annual General Meeting in December, or the Subsea Engineering Dinner
in June.
Short-listed students are encouraged to publish their work as a paper,
jointly authored with their supervisor, in the Society's Journal Underwater Technology.
