Subsea developments represent a significant percentage of world-wide offshore oil and gas production. This contribution is likely to increase with the move into greater water depths and the continued exploitation of marginal fields. Subsea incidents, which occur too frequently and are largely avoidable, tend to be costly due to maintenance intervention. There are many related 'lessons learnt', available throughout the global subsea industry, that, if shared, could potentially reduce the number of subsea incidents. The intention of SIREN is to communicate knowledge so as to avoid the repetition of mistakes and to encourage the adoption of best practice. The potential savingsin terms of cost, the reduced number of health & safety and environmental incidents, and reputation protection are incalculable.
